This leads to multiple disruptions in plant metabolism, including rapid inhibition of photosynthesis (within 2–8 hours), impairment of membrane function due to the accumulation of free ammonia, and reduced protein biosynthesis caused by a shortage of organic nitrogen carriers. As a result, free ammonia accumulates to toxic levels, producing the so-called "burning effect."
